If you would like to visit Great Britain by car, you can either cross the Channel by ferry or by train (Channel Tunnel). We have done both, but because we like to travel by car we prefer the crossing by ferry. For us it is most convenient to drive to Calais (France) and take the ferry from there. In all occasions we booked at P&O Ferries, but SeaFrance is also an option. Both go to Dover (Great Britain), which suits best for our journeys.
Boarding is quite simple and common for all ferry companies and dock locations. For example: drive to Calais and follow the signs to "Channel Ferry" (most of the times depicted as a boat icon with cars inside). At the docks you'll find plenty of signs pointing to Departure. Because we always book in advance (which we highly recommend!) we follow the signs that say "with reservations". First you'll need to go through Customs (passport check), next is a ticket boot. Then you'll be directed to a parking lane where you will wait for further instructions. About half an hour before departure, boarding will start (just follow the instructions by the employee's at the dock).
Once inside the boat you'll have to park your car and leave the car (you're not allowed to be at the car deck during crossing). After arrival you can return to your car and by following the directions of the employee's get off the ferry. Before exiting the docks you might be stopped by Customs (like us ;) to see if you're not doing anything illegal.
Then you're on your way, just make sure to drive on the left-hand side once your on the roads in Britain!
