Travel Report 2000: Brand, Vorarlberg (Austria)

Day 1: Su 23/07

Departure at 07:20h from Elsloo as planned and we arrived at 16:45h, not as planned :). We ended up in a big traffic jam at Pforzheim (had to go through the city for some strange reason !?). Total delay: 2 hours. Oh well, finally we managed to get to our holiday cottage in Brand. Weather: sunshine but also rain.

Day 2: Mo 24/07

First we went shopping at Spar market in Bürs (since 2002 this is an InterSpar Hypermarkt inside the Zimbapark shopping mall). It's kinda routine; we have always done this in the past; shopping on mondays at the SparMarkt. After that we just had a nice quiet day ... Weather: some sunshine, some rain.

Day 3: Tu 25/07

Our first tour-day! As always, our first tour is not so difficult or long. We decided we would walk up towards Muttjöchle (2094m) in the beautiful Silbertal (Montafon). Overall a nice day with sunshine, but also cloudy. The tour was very nice, first with the Kristberg cable railway up to Kristberg and from there first through woods (pretty steep path sometimes!) and then over alps towards Muttjöchle.

Day 4: Wed 26/07

Because it rained once in a while and we wanted to rest, we decided to stay at the cottage. Nice day to read a book ...

Day 5: Th 27/07

Great day, a lot of sunshine and warm weather, so my father and I decided: this day is a climbing day :) The tour: Hoher Freschen (2004m) not via the 'normal route' but via the Binnelgrat. In one word: superb tour!

Day 6: Fr 28/07

Too bad a rainy day. So time to read a book again ...

Day 7: Sa 29/07

Ai .. even more rain ...

Day 8: Su 30/07

Hm .. another day at the office ehh ... cottage :) Cloudy and showers, but it seems that tomorrow will be much better.

Day 9: Mo 31/07

Yes! Beautiful warm weather again :) This is how we like it. This time our tour is a roundtrip nearby: from Lünersee (Brandnertal) towards Verajoch (2330m) and then downward through the spectacular Schweizer Tor (2137m) and upwards again towards Cavell Joch which will leads us back to the Lünersee. A great tour, but pretty exhausting because of the many ups and downs. But nevertheless: definitely worth it!

Day 10: Tu 01/08

Stayed at the cottage to have a nice rest .. Lots of sunshine but very, very hot.

Day 11: Wed, 02/08

According to the weather man it should be nice sunny and dry up 'till the afternoon, so we decided to do a beautiful tour in the Bregenzer Wald region: Gehrenfalben (1938m). Great tour, nice view from the summit and not to difficult at all. Later on it started to rain .. the weather man was right .. this time ...

Day 12: Th 03/08

Terrible weather, so a nice day to go to a nice city. In our case, the city of Dornbirn. Although you did have typical Austrian buildings here, you could also see the new modern buildings of a big city very clearly. We also visited the Media Markt there to buy some CDs :)

Day 13: Fr 04/08

Day 13 and a Friday :) Neh, we don't believe in those things .. although .. cool weather, little bit of rain, very cloudy .. Stayed at the cottage all day.

Day 14: Sa 05/08

It was cloudy this saturday ... but dry! So my father and I did a nice training tour towards Amatschon Joch (2028). We started at our cottage at about 1000m, so you see we had a nice 'training' in walking upwards a 1000m in height! .. and down again .. We walked via the Niggenkopf Waldweg (nice path through the woods) upwards to the summit of Niggenkopf. Then further upwards towards Brandner Golm (about 1850m.) and towards our goal: Amatschon Joch. After a short break we went down again .. it started to rain a bit. Visibility was almost zero (because of the clouds). We walked down via the Bettlerwege (Lorenzitäli) and Parpfienz Alpe back towards Brand and our cottage.

Day 15: Su 06/08

Disaster day !! Lots of rain all over Vorarlberg. Just terrible weather, really ... So bad that we even had floods in and around the village. The pictures speak for themselves ...

Day 16: Mo 07/08

Finally a relatively 'nice' day again! We decided to do a tour again and went towards Speicher Kops nearby Silvretta and Galtür (Tirol). From here we hiked towards the summit of Breiter Spitz (2203m). It was cloudy, but at least it was dry .. it was nice hiking weather though. The tour was quite simple and easy, but nevertheless very nice, see the pictures below!

Day 17: Tu 08/08

Superb weather again! Unbelievable! .. so in no time we decided that we would do the tour we already wanted to do for years .. around the Brandner Mittagsspitze; from Lünersee upwards to Saulajoch, down towards Heinrich Hueter Hütte, steep up again to Zimbajoch (2387m), downwards towards Sarotla Hütte and finally back to Brand.

Day 18: Wed 09/08

Stayed at the cottage to recover from the tour the day before... Beautiful warm weather.

Day 19: Tu 10/08

For a change something quite different: a tour towards the 75m high Masonwasserfall (waterfall). Warm, sunny weather and a nice hike through forrests. What more do you want ??

Day 20: Fr 11/08

Our final tour this year and what a great one! My father and I visited the summit of Sulzfluh (2818m), one of the 'easiest' Alpine summits in the Vorarlberg region. Although it was an 'easy' one .. it sure was a long tour (about 8 hours) and on our way back we had to catch the last ride back with the Grabs seilbahn (cable railway). If we would have failed to catch it we had to walk for another 1½ hours ... but we caught the ride ;) Beautiful tour, great view and lots of fun in the snow at 2600m. Excellent day with lots of sunshine.

Day 21: Sa 12/08

Just chillin' and enjoying out last day ... Nice warm weather.

Day 22: Su 13/08

Went back home again, now without the trouble of traffic jams :)

That's it!
