Travel Report 1994: Brand, Vorarlberg (Austria)

Day 1: Su 03/07

Travelday :) Departure at 07:10 in the morning and because we had no troubles on our way we arrived quite early at our holiday cottage at 14:40h. In the evening we had our 'traditional' dinner at the Grill-Tenne.

Day 2: Mo 04/07

Our first full day in Austria was also quite 'traditional': shopping in the Spar Market in Bürs. In the evening we made a little tour around the village Brand. From our holiday cottage we walked towards the village entrance with its little chapel at the side of the road (Daleu Kapelle) and Hochegg. From here we walked upwards (quite steep for an evening stroll though) towards Studa and from there back down towards Brand.

Day 3: Tu 05/07

Our first hiking tour this year! We stayed in the valley and climbed the Niggenkopf (1589m) via the beautiful and peaceful forrest path. From the summit we walked down towards the Innere Parpfienz Alpe and further on towards Eggen (the top station of the first section of the Niggenkopf bahn). The last part of the tour was quite easy over a broad provision road. In the evening there was really bad weather; we heard sirens and saw firetrucks all over town!

Day 4: Wed 06/07

This day was not better then the day before: in the evening we again had a heavy storm. It was so bad that the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse (Montafon) had to be closed!

Day 5: Th 07/07

Luckily the weather had calmed down again, so we could go out for another tour! Again we decided to stay nearby and went towards Lünersee. We took the cable railway up and started our tour at the Douglass Hütte / Lünersee. Along the shore we went, slightly up and down, towards the Lünersee Alpe. From here we followed the trail towards the small and peaceful Verajöchli (2330m). A great hike away from the crowds! All the way a good path, only the last part was pretty steep. After a break we went back towards the Douglass Hütte and walked down on foot towards the parking lot (using the 'famous' Bösertrittsteig). After all a superb 4½ hours tour.

Day 6: Fr 08/07

Again a tour day! My father and I decided to go to Gamsfreiheit (2211m). It turned out to be a long and pretty exhausting +1200m climb, but nevertheless worth all the trouble ;) From the little village Marul (Grosses Walsertal) we walked over alps (Faludriga Alpe) towards the rocky summit. Nearby the summit there was some nice scrambling over ridges! (but not too difficult)

Day 7: Sa 09/07

Something different today: we planned a tour by car. From Brand we drove towards Bludenz, entered the Klostertal, went on towards the Flexenpass and further on towards Lech. During our trip we stopped quite few times to enjoy the view. After a somewhat longer break in Lech we continued our tour. Via Warth we drove towards Grosses Walstertal; the villages Au and Damüls and another mountain pass: Faschinajoch. Out of the valley we reached Bludenz again and in a short while we got back to Brand.

Day 8: Su 10/07

Our 'neighbours' gave us a little tip: visit the little zoo in Feldkirch someday. You might enjoy it :) So we did! At that time you couldn't compare it with nowadays a park like Wildpark Ferleiten (Fusch, Salzburgerland) or Wildpark Almach (Lienz, Ost-Tirol), but it was still nice. And in between one had some nice views over the town Feldkirch.

Day 9: Mo 11/07

Because of our 'tragedy' last year we decided to climb Hohe Kugel again, now in some better weather ... Everything went fine, the views were superb and the route was nice. The trail down from the summit led us over a small steep rocky passage but apart from this all paths were well worn out and never that steep. At the end of the day we had a bit of bad luck when someone 'bumped' into our car and damaged the bumper of the car.

Day 10: Tu 12/07

Again a tour day today! My father and I decided to climb another summit of the mountain range 'Walserkamm'. We decided to climb the highest of all summits in this mountain range: Tälisspitz, 2000m. From Thüringerberg over alps towards the green but steep slope of Tälisspitz. After all a pretty exhausting tour again.

Day 11: Wed 13/07

The 3rd tour in a row: Tote Alp (2500m). Again we took the Lünersee cable railway up towards Douglass Hütte. But from there we went via the right side of the lake towards the Totalp Hütte. My mother stayed at this mountain hut while my father and I continued our tour a little towards a small Joch / ridge with a sign 'Totalp'. Because there was still a lot of snow left we had to cross a lot of this old snow :) We got back the same way as we came and took the cable railway down towards the parking lot.

Day 12: Tu 14/07

4Th tour in a row: Spusagang Scharte (2237m). One of the toughest tours this year, because of the steep rocky route towards the Scharte and also because of the large up- and downs (from 1600m to 2000m, back to 1700m and again up to 2200m. From there downwards to 1000m). Nevertheless an unforgettable tour: from Niggenkopf (we took the chair lift) over green ski slopes towards Amatschonjoch. Then downwards along alps high over Nenzinger Himmel. A final climb along high vertical rock-faces towards a small passage called Spusagang Scharte. From here it became a little 'friendlier' again: over nice geen alps via the Oberzalim Hütte back towards Brand. Superb!

Day 13: Fr 15/07

Because of the day, plus and more importantly: we were tired, it was wise to stay at the cottage :)

Day 14: Sa 16/07

In Grosses Walsertal there is this little village called Sonntag. It has also one cable railway up towards a large alp called 'Stein'. The cable railway is quite impressive because it crosses the valley at a height of more than 200m above the lowest point of the valley (which, in most cases is the river of course). After this nice trip we walked towards the Untere Partnom Alpe and from there we climbed the summit of Glattmar (1930m); although the summit is not particulary high (even in this region), it was a pretty steep climb :) Oh yes, on our way back we bought some nice mountain cheese which tasted very good!

Day 15: Su 17/07

This day we had to take the car to a garage to get the bumper fixed. We took the little Montafonerbahn (train) from Brunnenfeld (where the garage was) to Bludenz (were we stayed waiting for the car to be fixed). When we got back at the garage, they told us they had the wrong bumper :S ... argh .. so we had to come back the next day! Nevertheless we had a nice time in Bludenz.

Day 16: Mo 18/07

New day, new chances! This time the bumper got fixed :) Too bad we lost a day with this though ...

Day 17: Tu 19/07

We planned a tour nearby: Brand - Tschengla - Gaschiera kopf - Schesatobel - Parpfienz Alpe - Egga - Brand. But unfortunately we had to cancel halfway because I (Ronald) wasn't feeling well on the way (nearby Schesatobel).

Day 18: Wed 20/07

Today I felt much better so we could go out again. For this most likely, last 'real' tour this year, we went towards the small Sarotla Hütte in the quiet Sarotla valley. IN about 2½ hours a good path brought us at the mountain hut. My father and I continued on the trail a little and at a quiet spot (Eisentäli) we saw 44 (!) chamois passing by (at high speed)! When we told this at the Sarotla Hütte, some Dutch (!) people couldn't believe this and said: 'heuh, must've been cows' ... stupid Dutch ;)

Travel Report 1994

Day 19: Tu 21/07

As a closure my father and I walked along the Alvierbach (river) towards Kesselfall (waterfall) and further on towards the Schattenlagant Hütte. We walked the same way back.

Day 20: Fr 22/07

Went back home again.

That's it!
